Cancel culture: xenophobia and xenophilia online using Russia as an example

Developing Internet communication technologies are expanding the audience of both global culture broadly as well as Russian culture in particular. The world is conceptualized as multicultural and the cyberspace appears to be mosaic, thus indicating the idea of preserving and encouraging cultural diversity that is contributing to the spiritual enrichment of society. At the same time, digital technologies can have a negative impact by means of altering cultural values and restructuring the system of their coding. To be more specific, it leads to a possibility of an interpretation of a fact being distorted, which is why this article analyzes the instances of xenophobia online and beyond. However, in order to objectify the scientific knowledge on the topic of xenophobia, it would be remiss not to examine xenophilia. Xenophobia and xenophilia are two contrasting phenomena that can have a negative effect on human consciousness, harmful both for the one espousing them and the society as a whole. It is important to identify the mechanisms of their interaction, find a potential balance between them, and determine to what extent «foe» becomes «friend» as a result of cultural adaptation. In this regard, the paper deals with the phenomenon of the cancellation of Russian culture as a manifestation of ethnic xenophobia online and offline. An autobiographical method of research is applied when analyzing the instances of xenophobia directed towards the author in her career as an artist with the purpose of objectification of knowledge on the topic of the cancellation of Russian culture. The semiotic method is used to identify the primary and secondary meanings of the new symbols «Z» and «V» utilized in Russian cultural space. The article also analyzes Russian legal practice and evaluates the prospects of counteracting xenophobia.
